One of the most common uses for embossed printing in printmaking is logos. When you are custom embossing logos you are raising areas of a paper above the level of the paper’s natural state. During the actual production of embossed printing several tons of pressure is used. The embossing die and the embossed paper become united in a printing press and the impression of the brass or magnesium plate is left on the surface of the paper.

Often, but not always colour inks, spot color printing and varnishing are combined. When inks are not included in embossed printing it is known as blind embossed. This form of embossed engraving is also used to produce Brail, which is how the vision impaired people read. When you get your printing Blind embossed in business it is recognized as luxurious and extravagant.

To begin the embossed print process you need a concept. Once you have your graphic elements visualized they need to be illustrated in line art form. The least expensive way to produce the embossing die is to use magnesium based dies. They can be created photo-mechanically or digitally. This method of embossing paper may not be what you are looking for. Perhaps you want multi levels to your embossing die. In this case you need to define the depth of layers. A good example of embossed printing can be found here. This will help you understand what is involved in making a plate by using layers.

Making the communication method from an embossed printing buyer to the vendor of choice needs to be delivered clearly and concisely if perfection is the goal. Embossed Printing involves changing the shape of embossed paper to create multi-levels of fine imagery with paper. To transfer your desired effect on paper precisely, a simplification and outlines of the effect are required. Executed properly a beautiful three dimensional design on elegant paper will be sure to dazzle the most cynical design critics.

This old school, fine line, elegant method of printmaking is not cheap. The embossing die that is needed can also have tremendous impact on the price of embossed printing. A mag (magnesium) die, Brass Cup die, Brass Sculptured die are all priced much differently. I have listed them in order of production costs, the least expensive being a magnesium die. The basic rule of thumb is, this style of print- making is double the price of conventional printing using inks, at least.

The process of embossing is a lot like foil stamping, in fact the embossing machines that perform custom embossing also produce foil stamping. The added part to the process is the transfer of foil, which is applied from a roll that feeds into the embossing press as required. It can also bee combined with embossing ink, spot colors, and CMYK colors.

If you want to take a look at various simulations of embossing effects it can be achieved through graphics software such as Adobe Photo Shop. By using modern day technology you can virtually see your finished product before any expensive tooling takes place. This is a convenience that was not available when I began to learn this fine print making art. One fact remains about embossed printing projects is it converts ordinary in to the extraordinary.

If you’ve been searching for embossing, embossed paper or embossed business cards there aren’t many that will give you prices and allow you to upload files in 3 minutes flat. Indeed there are lots of places to look but few will allow you to get the answers you need immediately. Once you find potential good sources, these places may not all fit your budget or preferences that are available with elegant embossed graphics and print. Here’s some suggestions on how to make embossed business cards for yourself at a price you can afford.

Chooser paper that is suitable for your embossed printing.

Show your project to a professional engraver before you start making artwork for die making.

If you are on a low budget but still want embossed graphics keep your embossing simple. The more intricate the die, the more expensive it will be.

Try to simulate the effect using Photoshop embossing on a scan of the actually paper you will be printing on.

Be sure the embossing paper will stand up over time.

Enquire about stationery. The prices can bet cheaper grouping items together at the same time of machine embossing.

There really is no low-cost entry point for embossed printing. If you are looking for cheap printing perhaps color printing is a better solution. Where quality is of utmost importance, embossiing is a craft that must be treated carefully and competently. Take time and look at some of the great options offered by the embossed business cards online. They can help you collect your concepts.
You really need to find the suitable printing service that will help you attain the effect you are looking for on the right embossed paper. Take your time and look around.

Anyways, I have been working on this embossed business cards price calculator for the last 14 hours and my eyes are burning. It is completed now and can be used to get embossing prices on the instantly.

I Love to Help a Curious Customer

Today I had a request form Heather in Seattle, WA and she is interested in obtaining a quote/estimate for Embossed Business Cards with blind embossed logos and 2 colors for names and company information. There are two people that require a set of cards each.

I receive quite a few request everyday and first need to break down a client’s request in terms that can be understood so we have a clear basis for estimatiing the true costs of a project. So, here are the most important specifications required by any embosser before they can provide an up-front, honest quote that will never change.

Here are the 7 Main Components to any Printing/ Engraving Quotation

STOCK: What type of paper do you want to use?

INK(S): How many ink colors? Raised or flat

ENGRAVING: Embossing or foil stamping.

SIZE: What is the size of the project. E.g. a business card is 2 x 3 1/2″

BLEED: Do any of the elements run off the sheet edges?

QTY: What is the total quantity you wish to produce

DIEMAKING: What is the type of die required? There are several types of dies that can be used. The least expensive is a magnesium based die

Let me Breakdown Embossing and Printing Prices

PAPER STOCK

There are many options available with engraving but you want to make sure that the paper you select with tolerate the desired effect. If you are using a sculptured die that has many high levels of embossing, debossing or foil stamping then certain papers will work better than others. When you apply embossing effects you are stressing the paper used. Some papers are made to tolerate extreme stresses while others have a much shorter breaking point (they will rip and tear at some point). You are best to ask the engraver for a suggestion based on your unique project.

RAISED OR FLAT INK(S)

The most critical part of the combination of ink and engraving is registration. What is registration? Registration is a term that all printers and engravers can identify with. It means that colors ink colors and engraving (or any other printing/ finishing operation touch or need to align with each other). The general references used by printers include tight registration (colors are close or touching) or loose registration (colors and engraving do not touch and are not close together).

ENGRAVING TYPES FOILING OR EMBOSSING

Describe Engraving operations required. E.g. Embossing or foil stamping. For Foiling area is also important because foil is charged out based on consumption per square inch.

SIZE OF FINISHED PROJECT

Provide the finished trim size such as 2 X 3 1/2″ (standard business card size)

BLEEDING GRAPHICS

This is a term that describes the engraved and/ or printed image exceeding the edge of the sheet.

DESIRED QUANTITY

The total quantity required. For business cards you can describe them like 500 X 2 names. Which means you want to order 500 business cards for 2 different people with the same graphic identity. A word of advice with business cards…group them together at the same time to take advantage of group pricing.

THE ART OF DIEMAKING

This is an area that can be really expensive or very cost efficient. Think about the intended use of the die. Will it be ongoing? You see when you have a die made the cheapest way is by using a magnesium based die but they only stand up for 5-10/k impressions then you need to make another. On the other hand a sculptured or brass die can last for 50,000-100,000 impressions depending on the letterpress pressure required for each impression.

Once these questions are clearly answered an engraving company can be 100% accurate with a quote. There will not be that dreaded message, “The price of your engraving project is going to cost an additional $XXX.00 because you did not tell us that the XXX was XXXX.” Reputable engravers hate contacting a client back and boosting the price, but sometimes descriptions are not well defined and the result is an upcharge. Embossing and engraving is and art that cannot be short-cut or you will see it in the finished project. If it is the cheapest price you want for your uniquely printed masterpiece, then I am sorry engraving and/or embossing is not for you. Perhaps a standard four color business card is the best way to go?

Allot of Back Printing Ideas for your Embossed Business Card but Be Aware…

As you can see there are many ideas for making use of the backside of your business card. An important note to make is embossing the front side of your business card with effect the graphics on the backside. This is because embossing requires a die and dies leave a visual impression that is usually more prominent on the backside.

All you need to do now is insert a small text line on the front of your business card like “More details on reverse“. By printing on the back you will be able to communicate and elaborate on your products or services.

About Embossing and EmbossedPrinting.com

EmbossedPrinting.com specializes in Embossing dies, tooling and embossing. The advantage of Embossing is that complicated designs with smooth surfaces can be considered the norm. However when you look and feel a printed project it tends to stand out from the rest and is often kept based on that fact alone. Embossing is a printing technique for altering the surface of a sheet of paper by adding sculptural and more dramatic effects since the Embossing can push deeper into the paper surface. But one must be careful in selecting the type of paper that will be used. For highly detailed, multi leveled, sculptured embossing only certain papers are going tolerate the stress. Creating your three-dimensional image or design is easy as making simple line art. The types of printing machines that most commonly produce embossing on paper are the Kluge or Heidelberg Windmill. These machines are usually capable of foil stamping as well.

Embossing Uses

Most of the embossing that we perform uses a magnesium die as they are the least expensive. Our Brass dies can be used to dry emboss fine paper, thick card stock, fine stationery, scrapbook pages and much more.

High quality and reasonable rates.

Embossed projects typically include Christmas cards, Easter cards, Mother’s Day cards, Paper, Angel hair, Embellishments, Weddings, Father’s Day cards and postage stamps.

History of Embossing and tid bits you should know

Embossing is not used as often today as it used to be. Because of that is all the more reason to want to use it as it is really easy to create a look of unseen uniqueness and elegance that is usually kept for artistic merit alone. But there is information we need first so we can proceed with knowledge. Here are some important points to consider prior to producing your embossed printing.

Embossing is often produced in conjunction with printing inks

Embossing can be manufactured with no printing inks, otherwise known as Blind Embossing

Blind embossing is basically how blind people read

Ask your printer what papers are recommended for your project. There are many materials that have been specifically made for this. Only printers and paper merchants will have this information.

Embossed metal was used to produce the first licence plate in the US and canada in 1903

Embossing dies are priced based on intricacies, the more intricate, the more expensive

If you are interested in learning more about embossing feel free to contact us anytime. We have our own equipment and professionals on staff that can address any embossing concern you may have.

There are no limits to what you can do with the right paper, print and embossing combination. You can Print inks- raised or flat- in harmony with unseen paper embossing concepts. When designers and management put there heads together to include some or all of these prestigious techniques you are setting the spirit of your printing projects to display very unique imagery. You’ll begin to get a truer sense of possibility while discovering new horizons. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination wander- this is what graphic design is about.

Enhance the Look of your Printing Design

You can always enhance the look of any print job with tastefully added special effects. Create the printed piece that is kept by all those that see it. What you are going to discover on this site is exactly how to do that. The most dreary of print jobs will become more intriguing and rich looking when you blend the fineness of embossing into your projects. You will create a sense of wonder, excitement and anticipation in the minds of your viewers.

How is Embossing Produced?

Embossing, debossing, foil stamping, die cutting plus many other specialty print operations are executed using a letterpress. Letterpresses are one of the oldest forms of printing in use today. They are really cool machines. If you are blessed with an old Heidelberg you know what I am saying. We have a few 1949 windmills that we use for many creative aspects of printing. These machines are capable of delivering 50 tons of pressure per square inch. They are my favorite machines for injected embossing wizardry on.

Graphic Design with Special Letterpress Effects get Noticed

All award winning lithographic reproductions start with an idea and grow into brochures, annual reports, catalogues, newsletters, folders and so on. The talented brochure designers create with passion and precision at the same time. You will see evidence in a spiritual release in every design created with embossing and other related effects incorporated. If you have the courage to try something new then your printing design has the freedom to soar like an eagle.
